Visas and flights

Citizens of the Kyrgyz Republic can stay in Kazakhstan visa-free for 90 days, and this period can be extended by the same length of time. For the first 30 days, travellers do not need to register their place of stay with the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

The visa-free regime is suspended until 1 May 2021. Before buying flights to Kazakhstan, you need to obtain an entry permit from the local embassy of Kazakhstan.

Flight time depends on the route. Direct flights take from 1 to 8 hours; transit and connecting flights can take from 15 hours to a full day. Check the travel time when you book.

Best time to buy flights

The best seasons to visit Kazakhstan are spring and autumn, when there are fewer tourists and the weather is mild. The country has many natural and cultural landmarks, five of which are on the UNESCO World Heritage List, among them the Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi and sites of the Great Silk Road.

Buy your ticket to Kazakhstan several months before the trip, while cheap fares are on sale. The best time to book is midweek, either just after midnight or in the afternoon.

Time and communications

Kazakhstan has two time zones: UTC+5 (Aktobe, Aktau, Atyrau) and UTC+6 (Astana, Almaty, Kyzylorda). The latter is the same as Kyrgyzstan time. Clocks are not changed for summer time.

Mobile operators in Kazakhstan include Kcell, Activ, Beeline and Tele2; their SIM cards are sold in local mobile phone shops. Free Wi-Fi is available in hotels, cafés and restaurants.

Money and shopping

The official currency is the tenge. 1 KGS = 4.97 KZT, 1 USD = 420.94 KZT.

The Green Bazaar, one of the oldest markets in Almaty, is a great place to get a feel for Kazakh culture and to taste and buy local delicacies. On 21–22 March, people across the country celebrate Nauryz with fairs and festivals where you can buy souvenirs and try national dishes.
