Visa and flight
To travel to Germany you need a Schengen or national visa: submit your application and the supporting documents to the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bishkek. If you are going on a package tour, the travel agency handles the visa process.
The flight time from Kyrgyzstan depends on the number of connections and is at least 9–11 hours, so make sure your ticket includes in-flight meals. On arrival, passengers must fill in a migration card required for border control.
Best time to buy tickets
Buy Economy class seats in advance – 2–4 months before departure, on a Tuesday or Thursday night. A return ticket to Germany bought in one go is better value. Time and mobile connection
In winter Germany is on UTC +1, five hours behind Kyrgyzstan; in summer it is on UTC +2, four hours behind. From 28 March 2021, clock changes are to be abolished.

Money and shopping
The official currency is the euro. 1 EUR = 103.20 KGS. It is best to buy euros in advance, before you leave home, as there are few exchange offices in German cities. The exception is Frankfurt am Main, which has more than 100 currency exchange points. A good-value way to get cash is from ATMs that accept cards of international payment systems.
The Kyrgyz Republic is not part of the EU, so its permanent residents holding a long-term visa can shop Tax Free. VAT is refunded to those who keep their receipts and fill in the refund forms.
Transport and accommodation
Book your accommodation in advance, especially if you are travelling in the tourist season. You can rent an apartment, a room or a hotel room online. Couchsurfing is a good option for budget travellers.
Public transport is the cheapest way to get around, but study the routes first. If comfort comes first, take a local taxi or rent a car. The hotel reception can give you the phone numbers of these services.
