Time and communications
Uzbekistan is in the UTC+5 time zone, so set your clock back one hour on arrival. Clocks are not changed for summer or winter time.
Free Wi-Fi is available in hotels, restaurants and internet cafés. To stay connected, you can activate roaming with your own operator or buy a SIM card from UCell, Beeline, Mobiuz or MTS. International calls can be made from payphones at post offices, where operators will tell you the city and country codes. Kiosks sell phone cards for street payphones.
Money and shopping
The official currency is the Uzbek som (UZS). One Kyrgyz som equals 123 UZS, and one US dollar equals 10,505 UZS. Money can be exchanged at bank branches and exchange offices; check each one’s opening hours on its official website. The Kapitalbank app offers online currency exchange even if you are not a customer of the bank.
If you travel between cities, carry enough cash, as cards are far from accepted everywhere.
Bargaining is customary at markets, and you can sometimes get the price of a souvenir or accessory you like down by half.
Transport and accommodation
Tashkent has mid-range and upscale hotels in the city centre, some with all-inclusive service. You can read reviews, choose and book a room through booking services or on the hotel’s official website.
Budget boarding houses, guesthouses and apartments are available all over the country. Arrange cheap accommodation in advance and check whether free Wi-Fi is included.
You can get around town by public transport, taxi or private car. A car is the most cost-effective option, as taxi drivers often overcharge. There are no official car rental services, but you can rent a car from locals or arrange one through large hotels.
